MORTIIS Keiser av en Dimension Utjent Mortiis has quickly become one of my favorite performers and I await each of his new releases with great anticipation. For those of you who have never heard of this Norwegian native currently residing in Sweden (and your numbers are legion) here is a quick bio. Formerly a member of the death metal band Emperor, Mortiis fled to Sweden to escape prosecution when his fellow band mates were imprisoned for various violent crimes. Mortiis now produces stirring electronic symphonies. Mortiis also has green skin, razo r sharp teeth and pointy Spock-like ears (there are rumors that his facial appearance is actually make-up, but personally I renounce these testimonies as the whines of the misinformed or the merely jealous). Mortiis's new CD is very similar to his two previous albums: two extra long tracks of dramatic, synthesized wind and string instruments and accentuated with crashing cymbals and a few scant poetic lines recited by the monster himself. The musical pieces begin with a simple repeated rhythm which steadily builds upon itself, forming into a furious and rousing symphony perfect for rampaging Vikings. Dramatic and powerful, Mortiis is a master of post-classical synth instrumentation.
